About

A Respectful Approach to Oil Painting Restoration

Oil paintings carry more than colour and composition. They carry history, memory, and the hand of the artist who created them. Over time, however, natural ageing, environmental conditions, and accidents can compromise the stability and appearance of a painting.

Barnard Oil Painting Restoration is dedicated to the careful conservation of oil paintings, with the goal of stabilising and preserving artworks so they may continue to be appreciated for generations to come.

Each painting is approached individually, with patience, respect for the original materials, and an understanding that restoration should support the artwork rather than alter it.

Traditional Methods, Thoughtful Practice

The restoration methods used in the studio are grounded in traditional conservation practices developed through years of hands-on experience and mentorship.

Work is carried out using carefully considered materials and techniques intended to stabilise the painting while remaining as minimally invasive as possible.

Where intervention is required, it is performed with restraint and with full consideration for the integrity of the original artwork. The guiding principle is simple: preserve what is original, and intervene only where necessary.

Experience and Background

Barnard Oil Painting Restoration was founded by Ryan Barnard, a formally trained designer and art director with a lifelong connection to the visual arts.

In addition to a professional background in design and visual communication, Ryan Barnard spent many years studying the craft of oil painting restoration under the guidance of an experienced conservator. This apprenticeship provided practical training in the careful examination, stabilisation, and restoration of traditional oil paintings.

This combined background in both art and design allows each restoration project to be approached with a strong visual sensitivity alongside a disciplined technical process.

Studio Philosophy

Every restoration is guided by a few core principles:

Respect for the original artwork
The artist’s work always remains the priority.

Minimal intervention
Only the necessary work is undertaken to stabilise and preserve the painting.

Reversible methods where possible
Materials and treatments are chosen with long-term conservation in mind.

Patience and precision
Quality restoration takes time, careful observation, and a steady hand.

Based in Durban

The studio operates from Durban, South Africa, offering professional oil painting restoration and conservation services to private collectors, families, and institutions.

Whether a painting requires careful cleaning, structural stabilisation, or sensitive visual reintegration, each project receives the same level of attention and respect.

Enquiries

If you have a painting that may require restoration or conservation, enquiries are welcome. An initial consultation allows the condition of the artwork to be assessed and the most appropriate course of treatment discussed.
